Since 1992, the Buchheim Lab has been studying eukaryotic microbial diversity with an emphasis on the green algae. Most recently, the lab has focused on diversity among isolates of Haematococcus and their close allies (e.g., Ettlia) with an emphasis on sequence-structure diversity of the ITS2 ribosomal gene and carotenoid (astaxanthin) variation. Other areas of research include:
- Intragenomic Variation of Multi-copy Ribosomal Genes
- Concerted Evolution and Sexuality
- Algal-Bacterial Consortia for Wastewater Remediation
- Aerobiology of Aspergillus flavus
- Molecular Characterization of Juniperus pollen
